CDC warns of relaxing coronavirus restrictions
Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned Wednesday against easing restrictions on coronaviruses. It comes after Texas announced on Tuesday that it would lift its mask mandate.
We are at a critical point in the pandemic. So much can turn out in the coming weeks. On the one hand, cases in the country are stabilizing at rates, at rates that are on the verge of potential recurrence. And B.1.1.7. A hyper-transmissible variant is looming ready to hijack our successes to date. And on the other hand, stamina has weakened. Fatigue wins out and the exact steps we have taken to stop the pandemic are too often blatantly ignored. All the while, we are on the verge of capitalizing on the culmination of historic scientific success, the ability to vaccinate the country in just three or four more months. How it unfolds is up to us. The next three months are crucial. I think we at the CDC have been very clear that now is not the time to lift all restrictions. I think, as I said in my remarks, the next month or two will be really crucial in terms of how this pandemic unfolds. As we ramp up the vaccination, we really need to reduce the amount of virus circulating as we try to vaccinate everyone. I will also note that every individual has – is empowered to do the right thing here, regardless of what states decide for their personal health, for public health, for their health, for their loved ones and their communities. I would always encourage individuals to wear masks, to distance themselves socially and to do whatever it takes to protect their own health.
