Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary under former President Donald J. Trump, will officially announce her candidacy for Arkansas governor on Monday in a video uploaded in the morning, said a person informed of his projects.
Ms Sanders will run for a seat her father, Mike Huckabee, once held, and she is considered Mr Trump’s preferred candidate.
It will also be, to some extent, a test of Mr. Trump’s remaining strength in the Republican Party, which has found itself divided after the tumultuous last weeks of Mr. Trump’s presidency, his false allegations of widespread electoral fraud. and its role in ignition. a riot of his supporters on the Capitol on January 6.
When Ms Sanders resigned as press secretary in June 2019, Mr Trump suggested that she run for governor of Arkansas. She’s expected to face a primary, but her name recognition alone should give her a boost early on.
Ms Sanders already has a fundraising team in place, another person briefed on her plans said.
Ms Sanders was one of Mr Trump’s favorite advisers when she worked for him. But she was also a lightning rod for critics when she was a press secretary, especially for her frequent fights with reporters in the White House briefing room.
