But the majority of Republicans in the Senate remain opposed to the plan.
“What we should do is focus on the $ 900 billion that we have already approved and that Secretary Mnuchin helped us negotiate,” said Senator John Cornyn of Texas.
“Instead of taking proper credit for these good things, focusing on ‘the bigger check issue,’ he continued, ‘” undermines the very positive impact of what we have already done. “
“It’s such a huge number,” said Senator James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma. “I would have a hard time supporting him.”
A decision by Mr. McConnell to tie all of Mr. Trump’s demands could sink the law. Democrats are unlikely to approve a hasty overhaul of the legal shield currently in place for social media companies, known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, especially the measures proposed by Republican senators aimed at to deal with what they see as an anti-conservative bias.
Mr Trump attacked Article 230 for months, arguing without evidence that the law allows websites to censor conservative views. Data shows that conservative personalities and editors often thrive online. Conservative Republicans have introduced several bills addressing the issue over the past two years, though none of them have become law.
Although concerns over Section 230 are bipartisan, lawmakers are unlikely to be able to reach agreement on the issue within the next week. Mr. Trump and his allies have yet to find substantial common ground with Democrats, who want changes to discriminatory advertising or terrorist content online above all else.
“If Senator McConnell tries to load the bipartisan CASH law passed by the House with independent and partisan provisions that will do absolutely nothing to help struggling families across the country, it will not pass through the House and cannot become law, ”Schumer said in a statement. “Any move like this by Senator McConnell would be a blatant attempt to deprive Americans of a $ 2,000 survivor’s check.”
Despite the lack of action on a bigger check, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, said Tuesday in a tweet that $ 600 checks could start arriving in bank accounts as early as Tuesday evening and continue into next week, while paper checks will start mailing Wednesday.
