Biden signs order to strengthen supply chains

President Biden signed an executive order aimed at reducing the United States’ dependence on products manufactured abroad, especially during a national emergency, after a bipartisan meeting with lawmakers.

The Vice President and I had a very productive meeting with a bipartisan group of Senators and Members of Parliament to address an issue that concerns both our economic security and our national security: the resilience and reliability of our critical supply chains. . This is a critical area where Republicans and Democrats agreed this was one of the best meetings, this is the best meeting I think we’ve had so far, even though we’re only here for five weeks. It was like the good old days. People were actually on the same page. Americans should never face shortages of the goods and services they rely on, whether it’s their cars, prescription drugs, or food from the local grocery store. We should not have to rely on a foreign country, especially one that does not share our interests or values, to protect and provide for our people during a national emergency. This ordinance initiates a long-term review of the industrial bases of six sectors of our global economy over the next year. These reviews will identify policy recommendations to 40 members of our supply chain – sorry, to fortify our supply chains at every step and critically to start implementing those recommendations immediately.

Biden and Harris honor 500,000 Americans lost in pandemic

As the nation passed a “truly dark and heartbreaking milestone on Monday,” President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris observed a moment of silence during a ceremony at the White House.

Today we mark a truly dark and heartbreaking milestone: 500,071 dead. More Americans have died in a year in this pandemic than in WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War combined. This is more lives lost to this virus than any other nation on Earth. We often hear people described as “ordinary Americans”. There is nothing like it. There is nothing ordinary about them. The people we lost were amazing. They have crossed generations. Born in America, immigrated to America. But just like that, many of them took their last breaths on their own in America. As a nation, we cannot accept such a cruel fate. Although we have been fighting this pandemic for so long, we must resist becoming numb with pain. We must resist seeing every life as a statistic or a blur or on the news. We must do this to honor the dead, but just as importantly, take care of the living, those they have left behind.

United States joins Paris climate agreement

President Biden told leaders of the Group of 7 nations that climate change is a priority for his administration as the United States officially joined the Paris climate agreement on Friday.

We can no longer delay or do the bare minimum to tackle climate change. It is a global existential crisis. And we will all suffer, we will all suffer the consequences if we fail. We need to quickly step up our commitments to aggressively reduce our emissions and hold each other accountable for achieving our goals and increasing our ambitions. This is why, as president, I immediately joined the Paris agreement. And from today, the United States is officially, once again, a party to the Paris Agreement, which we helped put in place. On Earth Day, I will host a leaders’ summit to help drive more ambitious actions among major emitters, including national climate action here in the United States. I am grateful and grateful for Europe’s continued leadership on climate issues over the past four years. Together, we must invest in the technological innovations that will fuel our clean energy future and enable us to create clean energy solutions in global markets.

Biden challenges critics of his coronavirus relief bill

President Biden on Friday called Republicans who complained that his $ 1.9 trillion economic relief package was too big to name the specific provisions they would prefer to remove from the bill.

We need Congress to pass my US bailout that deals with the immediate crisis, the emergency. Now the critics are saying my plan is too big, that it cost $ 1.9 trillion is too much. Let me ask them, what would they make me cut? What would they make me forget? Shouldn’t we invest 20 billion dollars to vaccinate the nation? Shouldn’t we invest $ 290 million to extend unemployment insurance to 11 million Americans? Shouldn’t we invest $ 50 billion to help small businesses stay open when tens of thousands of people have had to close permanently? If we don’t adopt the American Rescue Plan, 40 million Americans will lose their nutritional assistance thanks to a program we call SNAP, the old food stamp program. Are we not investing between $ 3 billion and $ 3 billion to prevent families from going hungry? I am grateful that the Senate and the House are moving quickly and I am ready to hear their ideas on how to improve the package and make it cheaper. I am open to it. But we need to clarify who is being helped and who is injured.

Biden returns to the international stage

President Biden spoke on Friday of struggles for democracy and the importance of building close alliances with foreign leaders.

The last time I spoke in Munich, I was a private citizen. I was a professor, not elected, but I said at that time that we will be back. And I’m a man of my word – America is back. I speak to you today as President of the United States at the very beginning of my administration, and I send a clear message to the world: America is back, the transatlantic alliance is back and we are not watching backward. We wait together. Global dynamics have changed. New crises demand our attention. We cannot focus only on the competition between countries which threaten to divide the world or only on the global challenges which threaten to engulf us all together if we do not cooperate. We need to do both, working together with our allies and partners. So let me clear up any lingering doubt. The United States will work closely with our partners in the European Union and the capitals of the continent.

Video: Biden to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu ‘soon’

First of all let me say about Israel, I know there have been questions about when the president will speak with Prime Minister Netanyahu, which was, I think, the root of this question or how the question started. So let me first confirm to you that his first call with a leader in the region will be with Prime Minister Netanyahu. It will be soon. I don’t have an exact date for you, but it’s soon. Stay tuned. Israel is, of course, an ally. Israel is a country in which we have important strategic security relations and our team is fully engaged. And on Saudi Arabia, I would say, you know, we made it clear from the start that we were going to recalibrate our relationship. The president’s counterpart is King Salman. And I expect that when the time comes, he will have a conversation with him. I don’t have a timeline prediction on this. But I will also say that, you know, Saudi Arabia is in a position where it is defending itself against threats from the region. You know, they have critical self-defense needs. And we will continue to work with them on these issues while clarifying the areas where we have disagreements and where we have concerns. And it is certainly a change from the approach of the previous administration.

Trump ‘didn’t do his job’ on vaccine rollout, says Biden

President Biden visited the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he said Covid-19 vaccines would not be available to all Americans until late summer due to poor planning for his predecessor.

“It’s no secret that the immunization program was in much worse shape than my team and I had anticipated. We felt and were told that we had a lot more resources than when we came to power. While scientists have done their job of discovering vaccines in record time, my predecessor – be very blunt about this – did not do his job in preparing for the enormous challenge of vaccinating hundreds of millions of people. Americans. When I became president three weeks ago, America had no plan to vaccinate most of the country. It was a big mess that will take time to fix, to be honest with you. And we thought and we were led to believe that there was a lot more vaccine available than there was. And when I said in the first hundred days, I guaranteed, I promised that we would get a hundred million shots in people’s arms, everybody said, ‘You can’t do that. It’s incredible. Now I get, “Why can’t you get more? To get to the place where these guys always legitimately ask me is when will we have enough vaccines to have over 300 million people? We’re going to be in a position where it’s going to be, it won’t be at the end of summer.

Video: ‘We’re still in the teeth of this pandemic,’ Biden says

We are still the teeth of this pandemic. In fact, January was the deadliest month in the entire pandemic. We have lost almost 100,000 lives. I know some members of Congress believe that we have already done enough to deal with the crisis in the country. Others think things are getting better and we can afford to sit down. And do little or do nothing at all. This is not what I see. I see tremendous pain in this country. A lot of unemployed people, a lot of hungry people staring at the ceiling tonight, wondering what am I going to do tomorrow? And I believe Americans are now expecting their government to help, to do our job, not to let them down. So I will act, and I will act quickly. I would like to be – I would like to do it with the support of the Republicans. I’ve met Republicans and some really good people want to do something, but they’re just not willing to go as far as I think we need to go. I told Republicans and Democrats that it was my preference to work together. But if I have to choose between getting help right now for Americans who are suffering so badly and getting bogged down in a long negotiation or compromising on a crisis-level bill, it’s an easy choice. . I will help Americans who are suffering now. This is why I am so grateful to the House and the Senate for moving so quickly on the US bailout. The # 1 American Rescue Plan item is vaccines, vaccines. The second, the American Rescue Plan, will meet the $ 2,000 commitment – $ 600 is already out, $ 1,400 in checks to people who need it. I do not cut the size of the checks. They’re going to cost $ 1,400, period. This is what the American people promised.
