An 18-year-old Texas man was arrested in the fatal shooting of actor Eddie Hassell last weekend in what police described Thursday as a “random theft” that turned fatal.
The man, D’Jon Antone, was arrested “without incident” Wednesday by the US Marshals Service and the Grand Prairie Police Department, the department said. He is being held for murder punishable by death, on bail set at $ 500,000.
It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Antone had a lawyer. Her relatives could not be reached immediately for comment and a spokeswoman for the Tarrant District Attorney’s Office said she had no further information.
Mr. Hassell, 30, was best known for his roles on the NBC show “Surface” and the 2010 film “The Kids Are All Right”. He was shot dead outside his girlfriend’s apartment in Grand Prairie, a suburb of Dallas, around 1 a.m., according to his representative, Alan Mills. The actor was shot in the abdomen and taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, Mills said.
Mr Antone was arrested in Dallas, where he lives, Grand Prairie police spokesman Constable Mark Beseda said Thursday. The department did not release further details of the theft, although a car was not taken that did not belong to Mr Hassell, Officer Beseda said.
“We think it was a robbery gone bad,” he said.
Mr. Hassell, who lived in Waco, Texas, appeared on “Surface,” a science fiction show about “an often dangerous new species of marine life” starring actress Lake Bell and aired in 2005 and 2006 , according to IMDb.
He played the pill-sniffing teenager Clay in “The Kids Are All Right,” and in the 2013 movie “Jobs,” Mr. Hassell played Chris Espinosa, who built circuit boards for a neighbor named Steve Jobs.
Mr Hassell’s family could not be reached for comment on Thursday.
