Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old who was filmed filming three people during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August and accused of killing two people, has been released from prison after posting $ 2million bail. dollars, said the sheriff.
Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said Mr Rittenhouse was released on Friday afternoon. A lawyer for Mr Rittenhouse said supporters for the teenager had raised the funds necessary to win his release as he awaited trial. Ricky Schroder, an actor, and Mike Lindell, the managing director of MyPillow who is also an ally of President Trump, made donations that put the bond fund “on top”, attorney L. Lin Wood, written on twitter.
Mr Rittenhouse, who is white, has become a polarizing figure since the shooting in August. He became a hero to some conservatives, who said he was acting in self-defense and tried to protect the city from destruction by patrolling the streets with a military-style rifle. Protests rocked the city after a Kenosha policeman shot Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old black man, in the back.
Videos of the protests showed Mr Rittenhouse gunning down three people, two of whom have died: Anthony M. Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum. He was charged with six felonies, including two counts of intentional first degree homicide.
Mr Rittenhouse told the Washington Post this week that he has no regrets about bringing the gun to the protest and that he had an adult friend buy it for him after he gave it to the friend of the money from a government stimulus check.
“I feel like I had to protect myself,” he says. “I would have died that night if I hadn’t.”
Mr Huber’s father had urged a judge at a bail hearing earlier this month to keep Mr Rittenhouse in pre-trial detention, saying he believed Mr Rittenhouse considered himself “au- above the law ”. Mr Rittenhouse had been held in an Illinois jail, where he lived, for almost two months, as his lawyers fought unsuccessfully to prevent him from being extradited to Wisconsin, where he will stand trial.
